ALA names Maurer Chair of 2015 Lung Force Women’s Cabinet

The American Lung Association in Florida has named Panza Maurer Managing Partner, Susan Horovitz Maurer, Chair of its 2015 Lung Force Women’s Cabinet.
“Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of women in America,” said Maurer. “What is most alarming is that few women see lung cancer as a threat to them. Only 1% of women named the disease as a cancer that is top-of-mind for them.”
In making the announcement of Maurer’s leadership role, Cariann Moore, Area Director of the American Lung Association of Florida, explained that the Women’s Cabinet is “…a motivated group of empowered women that are committed to spreading the word about lung cancer and its devastating effects.”
The formation of the Cabinet is a new initiative which has a mission to drive strategy and awareness, influencing others to make lung cancer a disease that is top of mind.
“What few people know is that lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as a cause of women’s death in 1987,” said Cynthia Peterson, American Lung Association in Florida, Leadership Board Vice Chair.   “Actually, two-thirds of lung cancer cases are in those who have never smoked, or have successfully quit smoking.”
May 10-16 is National Womens Lung Health Week.  “Turquoise Takeover” is a LUNG FORCE campaign to bring awareness to women’s lung health issues. The campaign encourages businesses to turn the country turquoise, lighting landmarks and turning social media profiles turquoise, the signature color of womens lung health.
Maurer is the Managing Partner of the Fort Lauderdale law firm of Panza Maurer & Maynard, P.A.  A native of South Florida and the mother of two, Maurer has served in a number of leadership positions in the ALA over the past 15 years.  She is a litigator whose primary practice areas are healthcare and academic law, with an emphasis on regulatory and administrative work.  Maurer is a commercial arbitrator certified by the American Arbitration Association, and a Commissioner on the Florida Commission on Ethics.
